What is ScarWork?

ScarWork is a gentle manual touch therapy to help to improve functionality and pain after surgery or injury. It can help to reduce sensitivity and pain linked to scars, as well as relieving tissue tightness and improving mobility. ScarWork may also help to promote healing of scars after surgery and may reduce long term complications. Having therapeutic work done on your scars can support acceptance and emotional wellbeing following changes to your body after a surgery or an accident.

IS SCARWORK FOR ME?

What to expect from a session

ScarWork is a specialised manual treatment for people with scars, adhesions or fibrosis. These may be obvious externally through visible scars, but may also have an impact at a deeper level, for those who have had small incisions, such as keyhole surgery.

This treatment can be beneficial for recent scars (that have passed the initial healing stage of 6 weeks), but can equally help older scars that have been present for years.

During the initial appointment we will discuss your medical history and any issues you are experiencing related to your scar, such as tightness, pain, numbness or reduced mobility. Treatment involves work on or around your scar. This work is then integrated into your body through a variety of manual therapy techniques.

Clients usually notice changes incrementally over the course of several sessions, which may be 1-4 weeks apart depending on the age of the scar and the desired outcome. Visual changes are not always apparent, but scars usually feel smoother, more integrated into the surrounding tissues and looser after treatment.
